In-Simon-ia
It is my insomniac time, again, and for tonight’s meaningful bout with awakeness in the darkness, I have turned to old Duran Duran videos for company.
I have opened the dark and embarrassing trapdoor to pre-adolescent memories: when I was young, awkard and stumbling into a weird love? lust? claustrophobic devotion? for the knightly Simon Le Bon.

Earrggh. Have I grown up? When do we know when it’s happened?
Watching the videos, I feel as romantic now as I did then…is there a pre-adolescent me still living out life in some parallel universe, watching Duran Duran videos over and over at sleepovers? Why does it still feel just as good to watch the Fab Five bopping around on a yacht, as it did back then?
It felt good, and now I know why…now I know that Simon Le Bon’s wild look and weird poetry was honoring the feminine soul. Back before it was cool to tell girls they were cool.
Now that I’m older…(approximately 20…years…older…) I’m amazed at how the videos are trying to re-establish the feminine within our world…”New Moon On Monday” is a secretly planned bacchanal, in the midst of an authoritarian society…in “Union of the Snake,” Simon is escorted from the desert to the underworld by a woman, where he has a mystical experience of darkness, children, and a feminine snake human creature.
So it’s no wonder that girls everywhere naturally fell in love with our tall, brooding knight in the white suit.
And white tie.
Tucked into a navy shirt.
Her name is Rio and she dances on the sand
Just like that river flowing through a dusty land
And when she shines, she really shows you all she can
Oh Rio, Rio, dance across the Rio Grande
Now we’ve all grown up, but Duran Duran is still nice company at 3 a.m…and it’s still too poetic for Vegas. Thank you for the music…it still makes me feel good…
